Statement of Intent

To involve myself in the grand scope; not to produce single works of art but to produce in a manner that adds up to a whole - I look at my works as parts that add up to stand on their own on their own in a musical lyricism, that adds up like notes on a sheet of music; a total musical composition rather than individual high notes.

I admit that this is only part of it. I get to the point where I know the direction of my work but not the shape or color. Here, working in a tension provoked by contradictions; the still - compositional in which the work is conceived, more in terms of the compositional versus the energy!

The effect of the two opposites is put to work by me until the moment is revealed where the conscious choice doesn't exist and the paradox vanishes. One more work in the grand scheme of things; the search - the choice.

As one who grew up in the industrial Midwest, powerful influences came from the character of the streets, factories and the music of Detroit.  It is here where I can draw ideas from a wealth of technology and raw materials, essential in providing my art with material and inspiration.

-John F. Piet III
